Good question!
The North Country novels are a collection of crime thrillers set in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The stories are psychological thrillers, police procedurals, and good old-fashioned mysteries. There are currently eight books.
THE SETTING
The Adirondack Park is six million acres big. Half of it remains protected state land, considered “forever wild.” It’s there in all that wilderness that Katie Calumet must learn to survive in GONE MISSING.
The other half of the park is private land. Large swaths owned by the wealthy, the rest occupied by everyday people who’ve adapted to the rugged terrain and often brutal winters.
Families like the Simpkins, who lose their son during a blizzard in DARK WEB. Or Jane Gable, a nurse practitioner blamed for the disappearance of her own husband in WHEN HE VANISHED.
THE CHARACTERS
As you read the North Country novels, you’ll see familiar faces. DARK KILLS features Detective Dana Gates, who shows up as a supervisor in another book. Lead crime scene tech Brit Silas, or forensic pathologist Janine Poehler, appear in various stories.
It’s kind of a “Where’s Waldo” of crime thriller series. How many characters can you find? Did you spot the deputy from GONE when he popped up in BURIED SECRETS??
READING ORDER
Another great thing about the North Country novels: you can read the books in any order. Want to start from the beginning and read straight through? Absolutely. But go any which way you like. Maybe you’ve already read one or two. Maybe you didn’t even know they were connected! Now when you’re reading your next North Country novel, you’re not only reading for the mystery, but wondering what familiar figure might pop up, and when.
I hope you’re able to experience all the stories, and that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. I loved being there as these characters came to life, led me down these dark and scary roads, and showed me their true grit.
As always, thank you so much for reading and supporting. Without you, of course, none of this is possible.
Warmest regards,
TJB
